This song began with a riff on 26 November 2017. I can picture exactly where I was as it was the day after my birthday and my partner and I were in North Cornwall – our first time away together. The weather was cold but beautiful, the extraordinary sharp light that lures so many artists to the area, stunning. We were sensible enough to be well insulated, experiencing biblical winds and even sleet at times. My favourite walk is over the cliffs between Port Quin and Port Isaac. If you’ve ever done it you’ll know just how tough it is. It was a perfect holiday and this unashamed love song tells the story.
Dedicated to Shirley Hayes for using it in her brilliant film Feivel.

WAY OUT WEST

We headed out on a sunny sand dune
A blade of light cuts the cold afternoon
We’re feeling free 'cause no one needs us here

I realise I’ve been missing the sea
Lying low in the estuary
I think you feel the same way it’s pretty clear

I’ve waited patiently
To be here with you
A message in a bottle won’t do

CHORUS
So in years to come
We’ll know that we were blessed
By our time spent way out west

There’s no alarm so we sleep in late
One look at you and the coffee can wait
Who’s to know we stole another hour?

When we emerged on the other side
There’s nothing left that we need to hide
We just gave into a higher power

Reacquainted with my favourite place
A wind swept cliff top
Meets a new cliff face

CHORUS

A bike ride on a railway trail
A photo by the ferry rail
The perfect birthday dinner guest
When you know, well you know
When you’re way out west

CHORUS
